"GILT AND CONSCIENCE"
OPENS AT CANVAS GALLERY ON TUESDAY FEBRUARY 17TH 2015, FROM 5 - 8 PM.
"This show is about remembrance: remembrance of a personal history of art, of survival, and of an archive of things already lost.
I began by examining which aspects of contemporary Pakistani art history affected my own development. I was fortunate enough to have been taught by both Colin David and Zarina Hashmi. Although Shakir Ali died before I was born, I grew up around his "Woman with Bird", a resplendent red painting. In the handful of paintings I'm presenting that relate to these three artists, I wanted to formally engage with their work using my own language. Gold leaf turned out to be a seamless way to do that: the gilding echoed Colin David's own obsession with flatness, Zarina Hashmi's repeated use of the grid, and Shakir Ali's monumentality. More importantly, I want to assert their place in our art history.
Equal part baroque and divine, gold has an immediately recognizable history in devotional art of all kinds. My work is still heavily influenced by the idea of worship and divinity, and specifically to what we chose to immortalize in both concept and practice."
THE SHOW REMAINS OPEN DAILY UNTIL FEBRUARY 26TH 2015 FROM 11 AM - 8 PM (EXCLUDING SUNDAY)
